2 Reasons I Don’t Read Traditionally Published Fiction Anymore (For The Most Part)

Once upon a time, I enjoyed reading traditionally published fiction. Once upon a time, I would check out any book that caught my eye – as long as it was written by a Christian author, of course.

Cut to the present day.

I barely read traditionally published fiction anymore.

I think it all started when I came across my first indie read – Storming by K.M. Weiland. Then I read her portal fantasy Dreamlander. Then I started reading other indie books.

Nowadays? The only trad author I’m still willing to read is Terri Blackstock. Of course, I’m still open to trying newer trad authors, like what I did last year with Tell Her No Lies by Kelly Irvin. (At least I think it was last year)

But for the most part, I’m going to stick mostly with indie fiction.

So, why don’t I read trad fiction again? Oh yeah.

Formulaic Plots

I will not name the author, but every suspense book of hers I’ve read is the exact same story. Sure, some parts of each story are a tad different, but not really. Once you’ve stripped it down to the basics, it’s just the exact same story. Over and over and over again, in every single book. Needless to say, I haven’t read her books in a while. (However, there was one book of hers that seemed to flip in the opposite direction)

Emphasis On Physical Attraction

Too much emphasis to be exact. Too much as in the female MC going goo-goo-eyed over the male MC’s muscles or the male MC going goo-goo-eyed over the female MC’s lips…WHEN THEY MEET.

Hello, that’s better saved for married couples, not unmarried couples.

I can’t recall the number of books I’ve put down because of this or the number I kept reading simply because I thought it was tame enough (for the most part, it was), but I can recall at least one book that has sworn me off of all the books from that author.

Just no. Nope. Nuh-uh. Never ever again. Nopety nope nope.
