Insomnia

The clock read 2:37 A.M. Sophie blankly stared at the wall, slate-gray eyes red-rimmed and puffy.

She should be sleeping. She shouldn’t have her pillow clutched to her chest, to use for muffling the next round of tears in order to not wake her best friend up.

They wouldn’t be sharing the small apartment for much longer. Christy was engaged and her wedding was just two weeks away.

Sophie bit her lip so hard it bled. The anniversary of her own would’ve-been wedding was in three months.

Today was the anniversary of Justin’s death.

Even now, four years later, she could still see the look of determination on his soot-covered face as he ran back into the burning warehouse to help more people out. The look in his sky-blue eyes when he glanced at her. She could feel the heat of the flames, smell the smoke, hear the roar as the building exploded.

With Justin and others still inside.

She buried her face in her pillow, shoulders shaking as she gave in to grief once again.
